John Risley was an illustrator, sculptor and furniture designer born in Waterville, Maine. He was well-known for his line drawings rendered in his own distinctive style, a visual language he later brought to furniture design and sculpture.
Risley received a BFA in 1949 from RISD and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy in 1950, both in sculpture. He taught at Wesleyan University from 1954 to 1987.
