In the 9th century, Viking merchants brought Islamic silk textiles to Scandinavia by trading routes through Russia and the Byzantine Empire. Consequently, Scandinavians were introduced to Ottoman knotted pile rugs, which later influenced Scandinavian rya rug design.
Rya rugs are traditionally made from wool. Each knot is comprised of 3 strands, with a pile measuring between 1 and 3 inches. in the early fifteenth century seal hunters and sailors would cover themselves with rya rugs in place of furs!
